Back in 2001, when the digital DJ revolution was still in its infancy, I found myself inspired by a good friend and colleague, Geoff Bergey—better known behind the decks as @BigTallGeoff. At the time, we were both working in the dot-com department of Mars Music Inc., a place where creativity and technology often collided in unexpected ways. Geoff was the first among us to take the plunge into hardware, picking up a Numark CDMix 1, a dual CD player and mixer combo that became the launchpad for countless late-night sessions. Around the same time, I was experimenting with AtomixMP3, one of the earliest DJ software programs, released in September 2000. That software would later evolve into VirtualDJ, officially launched on July 1, 2003, with AtomixMP3 development ending in December 2003. Looking back, it’s wild to realize we were right there at the start of that transition—bridging the gap between physical gear and the digital future. Geoff’s passion and willingness to experiment with sound were what first pushed me to take DJing seriously. He showed me that mixing wasn’t just about playing tracks back-to-back—it was about curating moods, sculpting energy, and creating a journey for listeners. That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
