Nicholas Bracegirdle—better known as Chicane—has left a permanent mark on my musical taste. His sound is a fusion of trance, Balearic house, and ambient electronica, often drenched in lush melodies, oceanic atmospheres, and emotional vocal lines. It’s music that feels both expansive and intimate, equally at home on a dancefloor in Ibiza or in solitary late-night listening sessions.

Chicane’s catalog spans decades, and it has been part of my playback across different stages of life. Early on, “Don’t Give Up” and the album Behind the Sun hit me like a revelation—anthemic yet deeply emotional, a soundtrack to both euphoria and reflection. That record wasn’t just an album; it was a portal into a world where trance could be soulful, cinematic, and timeless.

Even before that, back in 1999, I remember looping a DJ set that featured “Strong in Love.” I had it on repeat, unable to let go of its hypnotic pull. That track, like so many of Chicane’s, carried a sense of longing wrapped in rhythm, a reminder that electronic music could tell stories without words.
Now, arriving at my third Chicane mix, I see it as more than just a playlist—it’s a chronicle of how one artist’s evolving sound has woven itself into my own journey. From the late 90s classics to the modern remixes, Chicane has been a constant companion, shaping the way I hear and feel music.

15. Halcyon – (2000)

In the mid‑2000s, Ricky Ryan carved out a reputation as one of the most forward‑thinking DJs in the progressive house scene. His sets were celebrated for their seamless flow, emotional depth, and ability to blend underground textures with mainstream appeal. What made him stand out was not just technical precision, but the way he curated journeys—mixing tracks into narratives that felt cinematic. Among his most memorable contributions was his knack for mashups, where he would fuse disparate elements into something fresh and unexpected, often giving familiar songs a new identity on the dancefloor.

One of the best examples of this is “Don’t Give It Up (Loudeast Rmx – Ricky Ryan meets The Sorcerer Mashup)”, which combines Bryan Adams’ vocals from “Don’t Give Up” (2000 original, produced with Chicane) with the hypnotic grooves of Magic Vibes’ “The Sorcerer.” The result is a track that bridges trance‑pop emotion with deep house sophistication, creating a hybrid that resonated with both mainstream audiences and underground clubgoers. Released later as a mashup, it became a staple in Ricky Ryan’s sets, embodying the mid‑2000s ethos of experimentation and cross‑genre blending. It’s a perfect snapshot of how DJs like Ryan could take iconic material and reframe it for a new era of listeners.

The Third Chicane Journey: From Sunstroke to Saltwater (DJ Set)

I went back on the decks with a mood that felt both nostalgic and fresh, pulling together tracks from the past decade that still carry weight on the dancefloor. The selections leaned into deep house and progressive house, with touches of tech house and techno, creating a journey that was atmospheric yet grounded in groove. Artists like Dusky, Disclosure, and Alfred Taylor brought that melodic, hypnotic energy, while Gregor Tresher and deadmau5 added a darker, driving edge. It was a blend of sounds that reminded me how timeless these productions are — they don’t just fill space, they shape it, guiding the crowd through layers of rhythm and emotion.

The style was unmistakably underground: warm basslines, lush pads, and steady BPMs that build tension without rushing. The mood was hypnotic and immersive, perfect for a Saturday night set where the goal is to draw listeners in and keep them locked to the beat. Each track carried its own atmosphere, but together they created a seamless flow — deep, soulful, and dancefloor-friendly. It was the kind of mix that doesn’t just play music, it tells a story, moving from introspective grooves into peak-time energy, and leaving the crowd in that sweet spot between euphoria and trance-like focus.

Harmonic Voyage: A Journey Through Keys and Beats
Back in 2001, when the digital DJ revolution was still in its infancy, I found myself inspired by a good friend and colleague, Geoff Bergey—better known behind the decks as @BigTallGeoff. At the time, we were both working in the dot-com department of Mars Music Inc., a place where creativity and technology often collided in unexpected ways.

Geoff was the first among us to take the plunge into hardware, picking up a Numark CDMix 1, a dual CD player and mixer combo that became the launchpad for countless late-night sessions. Around the same time, I was experimenting with AtomixMP3, one of the earliest DJ software programs, released in September 2000. That software would later evolve into VirtualDJ, officially launched on July 1, 2003, with AtomixMP3 development ending in December 2003. Looking back, it’s wild to realize we were right there at the start of that transition—bridging the gap between physical gear and the digital future.

Geoff’s passion and willingness to experiment with sound were what first pushed me to take DJing seriously. He showed me that mixing wasn’t just about playing tracks back-to-back—it was about curating moods, sculpting energy, and creating a journey for listeners. That lesson has stayed with me ever since.

Fast forward to today, and it feels like things have come full circle. I suggested that Geoff send me one of his recordings to share with my audience—and he didn’t just send the mix, he went the extra mile. He took the time to add proper visuals, and they’re nothing short of amazing.

The result is Monday Therapy Mix: a lush, downtempo, deep house journey that pairs hypnotic grooves with striking visuals. It’s the kind of set that doesn’t just fill the room—it transforms it.

For those who follow my channel, you’ll know this mix is a perfect complement to the vibe we’ve built together. It’s immersive, soulful, and deeply rooted in the same spirit that first inspired me to get behind the decks all those years ago.

So, press play, lean back, and let BigTallGeoff guide you through Monday Therapy Mix—a piece of history, a continuation of a journey that started in the early 2000s with a Numark CDMix 1, AtomixMP3, and a shared love for music that moves both body and mind.

Let's House – Back on the Decks

After stepping away for a while—vacation time, me time, decompress time—it was pure bliss to finally slide back behind the decks. No deadlines, no project milestones, no stakeholder updates… just music. The kind of music that makes you forget the clock and remember why you fell in love with DJing in the first place.

The craving hit hard: house music. Deep, soulful, groovy, with just enough punch to make the room move. I wanted to feel the bass in my chest, the hi‑hats slicing through the air, the melodies wrapping around the crowd like warm light.

So I built a set that was part therapy, part celebration—a journey through fresh finds and trusted favorites. BPMs ranged from a smooth 120 to a driving 129, keys shifting like moods in a perfect night out.

House Therapy After a Hiatus – Back on the Decks
A journey from lucid ambient depths to Digweed's pounding cathedral of progressive nostalgia.

The set’s progression traces the lineage of deep melodic techno into classic progressive house, echoing the golden era curated by legends like John Digweed. The early tracks from 2025 deliver atmospheric depth and hypnotic rhythms, steeped in modern melodic production styles championed by artists like Madloch and Luciano Elvira. These selections mirror today’s emotive electronic textures—layered pads, restrained grooves, and subtle builds. They evoke a forward-looking introspection while keeping one foot rooted in the club’s dimly lit energy. As the mix unfolds, the tone shifts toward the more driving and cinematic qualities of early-2000s remixes by 16B, Teimoso, and Breeder. It’s here where the sonic DNA starts overlapping with the roots of Global Underground’s defining years.

In particular, the closing trio taps into the spirit of *Global Underground 019: Los Angeles*, mixed by John Digweed in 2001—a landmark release that immortalized progressive house’s deep and chugging aesthetic. Digweed’s influence is unmistakable: his ability to thread hypnotic grooves with rich melodic undercurrents shaped a generation of DJs and listeners. Tracks like Breeder’s “Carnival XIII” and Electric Tease’s “Your Lovin” [16B Remix] echo the tonal depth and emotional precision of that mix.

Deep Melodic Techno Meets Progressive House and 2001’s Pulse | DJ Set

After a whirlwind of hectic weeks juggling everything except my decks, I finally carved out the headspace to return to the mix. And when I did, my mind drifted toward one of the most potent forces that shaped progressive and tech house in the early 2000s — the iconic Tarrentella & Redanka remixes. There’s something about their sound: deep, hypnotic grooves layered with atmospheric textures and unexpected twists that made their work stand out not just as remixes, but as genre-defining statements.

What set this whole rediscovery in motion was a live mix my friend recorded at Club Space, somewhere around 2001 — straight into a MiniDisc, yeah, that tiny magnetic marvel from an era where portability met fidelity. That mix was raw, immersive, and mysterious, filled with tunes I couldn’t name at the time, but couldn’t stop thinking about either. My curiosity led me to dig through fragments until tracks like Datar – B and Soul Mekanik – Diskostatic emerged, unmistakable in their haunting depth and sonic architecture. From that moment, I knew I had to chase them down, load them into the CDJ-100S.

This mix feels like stepping into a time capsule — one that teleports me right back to the golden glow of Twilo in New York and the electric pulse of Club Space in Miami. These were the temples of progressive and tech house in the early 2000s, where legends roamed and the sound systems roared with unmistakable character.

From the late ’90s through the mid-2000s, Tarrentella and Redanka earned a cult following within the progressive and tech house scenes for their immersive, cinematic remix style. Their productions were often described as emotionally charged yet rhythmically hypnotic — deep grooves layered with melodic tension and subtle shifts that made each track feel like a journey. The consensus among DJs and underground heads was clear: these weren't just remixes, they were reinterpretations that elevated the originals into something timeless. Whether through their haunting rework of Tilt's “Seduction of Orpheus” or the ethereal pulse in Datar’s “B,” they carved out a distinct sonic identity that resonated with listeners craving substance over flash. Even years later, their catalog continues to evoke respect and nostalgia — a testament to music that not only defined an era, but still inspires fresh spins today.

This freshly unearthed November 2024 happy techno mix propels you from Phunk Investigation’s airy peaks through David Guetta and Nora En Pure’s euphoric vibes, culminating in a blissful Chicane finale.

When I first laid down this mix in November 2024, I wasn’t aiming to impress or chase trends—I just needed that sonic escape. This is a hobby for me, a ritual of creative disconnection where the decks become my journal and the beats my way of letting go. Life’s pace has made it harder lately to dive into sessions, but this set—dusty from being buried private for months—felt like the right kind of “fresh” I needed to fuel today’s rhythm.

Happy techno has always been my bridge between energy and emotion. You’ll hear that in tracks like Phunk Investigation’s “Your Love (Aeronautics Remix),” which kicks off with warm, pulsing synths that feel like sunrise. Nora En Pure’s “Wholehearted” then adds that soul-touch of melodic depth, elevating the mood before we ride into David Guetta’s bright and punchy “Perfect (Exceeder),” a nod to my early dancefloor memories. Each artist in this mix contributes more than just sound—they channel vibe, intention, and joy.

And as always, I save something special for the end—Chicane’s “What Am I Doing Here? Pt. 2.” That one has a way of putting it all into perspective: the search, the release, the calm after the high. It’s nostalgic, cinematic, and a perfect reminder of why I keep coming back to the decks—not for audience numbers, but for that timeless groove that grounds me in the moment.
